From French bédégar, from Persian بادورد or بادآورد, properly a kind of white thorn or thistle. From باد (bâd, “wind”) + ورد (vard, “rose”).

(archaic) A gall produced on rosebushes, especially on the sweetbrier or eglantine, by a puncture from the ovipositor of a gallfly (Diplolepis rosae). It was once supposed to have medicinal properties.
