Semi-learned word from older baptizar, borrowed from Ecclesiastical Latin, Late Latin baptīzāre, from Ancient Greek βαπτῐ́ζω (baptĭ́zō, “to immerse, baptize”). Compare the inherited Old Spanish form batear, also written baptear, found in works by Berceo and other texts from the 13th and 14th centuries.
