Likely a semi-learned borrowing from Late Old Anatolian Turkish *باتو (batu) that was attested only in compounds in the Ottoman translations of Quran into Old Anatolian Turkish since 1424, from Proto-Turkic *batïg (“west”). Otherwise, directly borrowed from Turkish batı. Likely used since 1960s.
