From Proto-Germanic *barō, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰoréh₂ (“that which bears weight or carries”), or from Proto-Germanic *barwijǭ (“bier; barrow”), in either case from the root *bʰer-. Compare bára (“billow, wave”), berlingr (“short bar, beam”) and English bier.
