Inherited from Malay balairung, inherited from Classical Malay balairong (compare Minangkabau balerong). Reconstructed as balai + *rung, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *balay (“house, hall”) and Proto-Mon-Khmer *ruuŋ (“unpartitioned building”).
