Internationalism (compare English bacterium, German Bakterium, French bactérie), from New Latin bactērium (“bacterium”) and Medieval Latin bactērium (“cane, walking stick; [shepherd’s] staff”), from Ancient Greek βακτήριον (baktḗrion, “small staff”), a diminutive of βακτηρία (baktēría, “rod, staff, cane; baton”).
