Uncertain, probably of pre-Latin origin. Some propose a derivation from reconstructed Gothic *𐌱𐌰𐍅𐌹𐌸𐌰 (*bawiþa), presumably from 𐌱𐌰𐌿𐌰𐌽 (bauan). Despite the surface sound similarity, a derivation from Arabic بَيْت (bayt, “house”) is unlikely.
