Ultimately from Andalusian Arabic *السَفُنَّارْيَة (*as-safunnārya), from Arabic إِسْفَنَارِيَّة (ʔisfanāriyya), from Ancient Greek σταφυλίνη ἀγρία (staphulínē agría, “wild carrot”); perhaps via a Romance language. See more at the Spanish cognate zanahoria.
