Inherited from Proto-Berber, from Latin cattus (“cat”), from a Semitic language. Compare Classical Syriac ܩܵܛܘܿ, ܩܛܐ (qaṭṭa, qaṭṭu, “cat”), Assyrian Neo-Aramaic ܩܵܛܘܿ (qāṭō, “cat”), and Arabic قِطّ (qiṭṭ, “cat, tomcat”).
Cognate with Awjila aqəṭṭùš (“cat”), Ghadames akaṭṭus (“cat”), Sokna yaṭṭûs (“cat”), Tunisian Berber and Siwi yaṭṭus (“cat”), and Nefusa aqaṭṭus (“cat”).
