From Ottoman Turkish آیرتلمق (ayırtlamaḳ, “to make or show a difference or preference for, to select, to clear of refuse”), from Proto-Turkic *adïrtla- (“to differentiate, to separate”), from *adïrt (“difference, separation”), from *adïr- (“to separate”), equivalent to ayı(k)- + -la + -mak.
