From Old Norse athuga; by surface analysis, at- (“ad-”) + huga (“to think of, like”), the latter from Old Norse huga, from Proto-Germanic *hugōną (“to think about, consider”). Cognate with Norwegian Nynorsk åthuga (“observe”).
