asunto-osakeyhtiö
(law) A housing company; a legal entity, peculiar to Finnish law, for ownership and management of a residential building in which real property is owned jointly by a limited liability corporation and the right to control and use each unit is tied to ownership of a particular set of shares; quite close to condominiums in the United States.
Synonyms: taloyhtiö (more common in everyday use), as.oy (abbreviation)
==== Usage notes ====
asunto-osakeyhtiö is the official Finnish term for this concept. The official translation into English is "limited liability housing company". However, the term appears to be unknown in the English-speaking part of the world. By contrast, the shorter translation "housing company", also used by Finnish sources, has also been used by non-Finnish sources.
While the individual units (often flats/apartments) are not technically directly owned by the people who live in them (who instead, however, have the exclusive right of occupation in them), the units are still nevertheless considered owner-occupied for most purposes.
