Unknown. Possibly borrowed from Sanskrit ईर्ष्यति (īrṣyati, “to envy”) or a related term within the Indo-Iranian family, or from Proto-Indo-European *ers- (“to move”); alternatively from Proto-Turkic *arsïlan (“lion”), whence also Turkish aslan (“lion”). Compare Tocharian A ārṣal.
