From Proto-Balto-Slavic *apwalus. Morphologically from ap- + valus, the latter part of which may be from Proto-Indo-European *welH- (“to turn, wind”).
Cognate with Latvian apaļš (“round”), and further related to Proto-Slavic *obьlъ (“oval”), which contains the zero-grade of the root.
