Possibly from Proto-Turkic *ïŋïra- (“to neigh; to bellow, purr”). Cognate with Karakhanid [script needed] (ïŋra-), Turkish anırmak, Turkmen yňranmak (“to scream”), Chuvash ӗнер (ĕner, “to cry (of children)”), Yakut иҥэрсий (iŋersiy, “to neigh quietly”), Kazakh ыңырану (yñyranu, “to moan”).
