According to Poultney and Buck, the term derives from ander- +‎ Proto-Italic *wakāt(i)s, itself also the source of Latin vacātiō. The component -se may represent a verb corresponding to Latin sit. If this interpretation is accepted, then the entire sequence is equivalent to a hypothetical Latin *intervacātis sit.
