Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit امُشَّ, امُشّ (amušša, amušš, “cat, tomcat”), possibly from Proto-Berber. Further etymology uncertain. Perhaps ultimately of onomatopoeic origin, imitative of the sound made to get a cat's attention. Compare Hijazi Arabic بسة (bissa).
Likely unrelated to cc (“to eat”).
