After O Amigo da Onça (literally, “the jaguar’s friend”), a Brazilian comic character created in 1943 by Péricles de Andrade Maranhão. In the comic, this character was sarcastic and frequently took advantage of other characters and put them on the spot. In turn, the name of the strip and its titular character were reportedly based on a popular joke wherein a hunter asks another what he would do if attacked by a jaguar; as the first hunter proposes scenarios increasingly unfavorable to the second, the latter asks if the former is his friend or the jaguar’s.
