From either German Amelkorn or Dutch amelcoren, amelkoren, respectively from German Ammel (from Middle High German amel, amer) and Dutch amel, variants of German Emmer and Dutch emer (“emmer”), + respectively German Korn and Dutch koren (“corn”).
