Unknown; possibly borrowed from Ancient Greek ἀλόη ὀξινης (alóē oxinēs, “bitter aloe”), or perhaps Arabic الْإِسْفِنْط (al-ʔisfinṭ, “vermouth, wormwood wine”). Alternatively borrowed from Proto-West Germanic *alahsinā (“wormwood”), if not the other way around.
