A learned compound of Ancient Greek ἄλιμος (álimos, “hunger-relieving”) (from ἀ- (a-, “not”) + λιμός (limós, “hunger”)) + the suffix -urgia (“work, practice”) (from Ancient Greek ἔργον (érgon, “work”)).
