=== Etymology ===
Probably borrowed from Middle Dutch âelgêer, from âel (“eel”) + gêer (“spear”), in which case forms with /ɛ/ are either due to the influence of el (“eel”) or from the alternate form elger. However, derivation from an Old English *ǣlgār cannot be entirely excluded (compare Old Frisian ēlgēr).

=== Noun ===
alger
(Late Middle English, rare) A spear for catching eels.
