Probably from a Vulgar Latin root *allargāre, from Latin largus (“abundant, plentiful”). Other theories derive it ultimately from a derivation or alteration of Latin legāre or alegāre. Compare Aromanian alag, alãgari; compare also Albanian largoj (“to leave”), Italian allargare (“to widen”).
