Possibly: A derivation from Proto-Indo-European *keHl- whence also Proto-Celtic *kaletos (“hard”), Proto-Slavic *kaliti (“to temper, harden”), Latin callum (“hardened skin”). Borrowed from Germanic, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *jekulaz (“icicle”).
