By surface analysis, ak- + ım. Coined by Turkish Language Association in 1934 to replace the Arabic borrowing cereyan during the language reform. Cognate with Crimean Tatar aqım, Turkmen akym, Uzbek oqim, Uyghur ئېقىم (ëqim).
