From Proto-Finnic *aigasta-aika, equivalent to ajast’ (“from time”, elative) + aika (“time”); refers to the cyclical nature of time. The same derivation can be found in other Finnic languages as well; compare Votic aigassaika (Pummala), Estonian aasta.
