From Old Irish aithis (“reproach; disgrace”), from Proto-Celtic *ati-wissus, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *éti (“beyond”) + *weyd- (“to see, know”). Comparable to Proto-Germanic *idiwītą (“disgrace, shame, disdain”).
