From Proto-Finnic *aktadak (“to hang up to dry, to fill a grain-drying cabin”), from Proto-Uralic *ëkta- (“to hang up, to set up a trap”). Cognates include Moksha афтомс (aftoms, “to set a trap, to cast a net”). The meaning has been influenced by ahdas, a Baltic loanword. Cognate with ahdata.
