Inherited from Proto-Finnic *ahnëh, from *ahnas (“greedy, voracious; eager”) + *-ëh. Proto-Finnic *ahnas is borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *(H)aćHnas. Cognate with Finnish ahne, Votic ahnõ.
