Perhaps from *ā- + Proto-Italic *wendō, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wendʰ-. Cognates with Sanskrit वन्धुर (vandhura), Ancient Greek ἴονθος (íonthos), Albanian unazë, Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (wandjan), Old English wendan, English windle, and Old Armenian գինդ (gind). By surface analysis, a- + 𐌅𐌄𐌕𐌖 (vetu).
