Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit اڢْچَنْ (afgan, “slave, captive”), from Proto-Berber. Cognate with Nefusa ڢُجْنُتَنْ (fuǧnuten, “the worshipers, the pious”).
The semantic development from "slave" to "human" is likely shaped by the Islamic theological concept of human servitude to God. A parallel development is seen in Hindustani بَنْدَہ / बंदा (bandā).
