From afal afal, aval aval + -la (verbalizing suffix), from Arabic أحول (ʔaḥwal, “cross-eyed”). Originally a dialectical term brought into the written standard during the language reform. See also Ottoman Turkish آفال طاپال (afal tapal, “dumbfounded, dumbstruck”).
