Learned borrowing from Northern Saharan Berber aḍlis (“lip”). Compare Ghadames aḍalis (“lip”). The word has shifted in meaning due to a scribal error. In the original work by R. Basset there seems to have been a mistake where lèvre (“lip”) was noted down as livre (“book”).
