From Old Irish admat (“invention, device, material, timber”), from Proto-Celtic *ad-mentos, from *manyetor (“think, remember”), from Proto-Indo-European *men- (“to think”). Cognate with Manx ymmyd. O’Rahilly suggests the etymology *ad-mazdo- and cognate maide (“wood, stick”).
