Inherited from Ottoman Turkish آجیقمق (acıkmak, “to be hungry, to hunger”), from Old Anatolian Turkish آچقمق (açuqmaq, açıqmaq), from Proto-Turkic *āčïk- (“to hunger”), a derivation from Proto-Turkic *āč-.
/t͡ʃ/ to /d͡ʒ/ after the succeeding vowel due to original long vowel in the first syllable, compare also conjugated forms of aç (“hunger, hungry”) to observe the same instance.
