From Late Latin ablūtiō (“washing, cleansing, ablution”), from abluō (“I wash off, cleanse”), from both ab- (“from, away from, off”), from ab (“from, away from, on, in”), from Proto-Italic *ab, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂epó (“off, away”), and from lavō (“I wash, bathe; wet, moisten”), from Proto-Italic *lawāō, from Proto-Indo-European *lewh₃- (“to wash”).
