Inherited from Proto-Berber. Compare Tarifit abeǧaɛ (“mud”) and Kabyle abellaɛ (“puddle”). Synchronically, perhaps a verbal noun of an unattested verb of the form *bbullɣ (cf. bbuǧeɛ), possibly from bb- + allaɣ (“bottom, mud”). Compare morphologically with abzzir.
