First attested as suindrecht in 1280-1287. Likely a compound of Old Dutch swin (“gully, creek”) and dreht (“ferry, watercourse”) (see -drecht). The first element was gradually reinterpreted to zwijn (“boar”). Compare Barendrecht and Ossendrecht.
