18th century, from Lower Sorbian cysć and/or Upper Sorbian čist, themselves derived from Proto-Slavic *čistъ (“pure”) because of the plant’s use as a blood purifier (cf. English woundwort). Cognate with Polish czyściec, Czech čistec.
