(Friesland) First attested as Sandbuyren in 1664. Calque of West Frisian Sânbuorren, a compound of sân (“sand”) and the plural form of buer (“house, cottage”).
(Noord-Holland) First attested as Zand Burem in 1839-1859. Compound of zand (“sand”) and the plural form of buur (“cottage, small house”). The element zand was added to distinguish the settlement from Noordburen.
