Yhdysvallat pl
United States (a country in North America)
==== Usage notes ====
Despite being in the plural, Yhdysvallat is accompanied by verbs in the singular number.
When in a very official context, the full name of the country is Amerikan yhdysvallat – that omission is similar to the omission of "of America" in the English name, but compared to English, the Amerikan is left out significantly more often and is generally only kept in formal contexts where ambiguity is not tolerated.
Unlike in other words in the same declension with Yhdysvallat, the 'old-fashioned' genitive plural Yhdysvaltain (as opposed to the contemporary Yhdysvaltojen) has not fallen out of use. Both forms are accepted and commonly used. Yhdysvaltain is more common and preferred in formal contexts, and was formerly more common overall, but Yhdysvaltojen is by now probably slightly more common in non-formal (neutral or informal) ones.
The official names of certain other countries (e.g. Mexico) also contains yhdysvallat in Finnish, but Yhdysvallat is practically always understood to refer to USA without disambiguation.
