From late Middle High German wissenschaft (“certificate”); by surface analysis, Wissen (“knowledge”) + -schaft (“-ship; making”). Akin to Dutch wetenschap, Low German Wetenschop, West Frisian wittenskip, Danish videnskab, Norwegian Bokmål vitenskap and Swedish vetenskap.
