First attested as De Wilde Ploatse in 1929. Compound of wild (“wild”) and plaats (“place”). In this case, plaats refers to an allotment to build a house on. The settlement was founded as a collection of illegally-built mud huts which served as temporary accommodation until proper housing could be built.
