Unknown. Perhaps from *Urgius, a name which may be attested in CIL XI 6689. It may be connected to Pre-Samnite 𐌖𐌓𐌖𐌚𐌉𐌄𐌉𐌔 (urufieis), although the reading of the Pre-Samnite term is disputed and thus its potential etymology is uncertain.
