From Karelian Uhtuo. Uncertain. Rahkonen lists tens of uht-, oht-, and vuoht- final placenames in Finland, Estonia, and norther Russia, mostly found around lakes and isthmuses.
Most likely from substrate word in a lost Uralic language for “isthmus”, from Proto-Uralic *ukti ~ *ukte ~ *ukta ~ *utka.
Some of the related place names may be related to huuhtoa (“to wash”) or huhta (“swidden”).
