Uncertain. Some suggestions include:
From some derivation of Proto-Indo-European *ters- (“dry”), the sense being "land," comparable to Proto-Celtic *tīros (“dry land”), Latin terra.
Of Slavic origin and meaning "this land," from Proto-Slavic *ta + *orlьja (“arable land, field”).
From the name of a late Roman hostel and fort, Late Latin Teriolis, located in Zirl, itself of pre-Roman (non-Latin) origin, perhaps from the Celtic word above, or from Raetic.
