First attested as thienhoeuen and thienhouen in 1253. Compound of Middle Dutch tien (“ten”) and the plural form of hoeve (“piece of land of a certain size”). The identifier aan de Lek ("on the Lek") was added in 2019 to avoid confusion with Tienhoven near Vianen.
