Uncertain; possibly from Proto-Italic *teiba, or borrowed from Sabine tēba (“hill”). Or could be related to Tiberis and the praenomen Tiberius. In Roman lore, the city was said to have been named for Tīburtus, son of the city's founder Catillus.
