Ter Aalst
التعريفات والمعاني
== Dutch ==
=== Etymology ===
First attested as aelst in 1311. Derived from an inflected form of te (“at”) and a toponymic element of unknown etymology. The formerly widespread hypothesis of a derivation from els (“alder, Alnus”) with collectivising suffix -t is no longer considered plausible. Potentially derived from Proto-Germanic *alhust (“dwelling place, shrine”). Compare Aalst, Elst, Maasniel, Nieuwaal, Niel, Niel-bij-As, Nivele and Waldniel.
