Tamarus

== Latin == === Etymology === The suffix -arus is also found in the river Silarus. The base *tem- is said by Pokorny to be from Proto-Indo-European *teh₂- (“to flow, stream, melt”), but this is unlikely. It is possibly instead borrowed from Proto-Celtic *tamaros (“river, waters”, literally “dark”), from a zero-grade form similar to Proto-Indo-European *tm̥Hrós (“the dark river”), from *temH- (“dark”). Also compare the cognates listed at Thames. === Pronunciation === (Classical Latin) IPA(key): [ˈta.ma.rʊs] (modern Italianate Ecclesiastical) IPA(key): [ˈtaː.ma.rus] === Proper noun === Tamarus m sg (genitive Tamarī); second declension A river of Hirpinia and tributary of the Calor, now called Tammaro ==== Declension ==== Second-declension noun, singular only. === References === “Tamarus”, in William Smith, editor (1854, 1857), A Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography, volume 1 & 2, London: Walton and Maberly
